We love Stan and his brutal honesty. If you think looking for a job as a creative is hard work wait until you manage to land one. And if you think that the hard work stops once you have a job then you are certainly in for a surprise. It doesn’t matter whether you are looking for your first job, pursuing a career as a freelancer or already working, being a creative is bloody hard work. Not hard physical work like in a factory, but mentally draining and seriously exhausting ... Read More! »

Hi Esther. I graduated a few years back, and since then haven't had any luck finding even an internship in Advertising. A lot of my former classmates have found something, but not me. I am a bit older than most of the other graduates, and feel like maybe the industry has an unspoken used-by-date for graduates. What do you think? My portfolio, etc. is all in order, but I'm at a bit of a loss. What should I do next? When you say your portfolio is "in order" I worry. If it hasn't gotten ... Read More! »

This week Stan explains that when you're starting out quantity is just as important as quality. If you’ve managed to impress someone enough for them to give you a brief to work on please grasp the opportunity as if your life depended on it. Don’t self censor. Don’t stop work when you think you’ve cracked it. Don’t just develop up one or two ideas. Don’t waste time polishing ideas on your computer. Just have ideas. And lots of them. And when you present ... Read More! »

I recently graduated from BA in Commercial photography which introduced me to the role of Art direction. I don't see my self doing another 3 years at uni for financial reasons and heard so many people braking into the industry without a degree. I hope on attending award school in 2013 and will be doing a few courses at ad school before hand. Am I going in the right direction? Is there anything else I should be doing to help? A BA in Commercial Photography would be very useful for Art ... Read More! »

Sometimes the most basic of things seem to work the best. Here at Junior we get many people asking us how to set up an appointment to see people. So this week I’m going to let you in on a secret – it’s called a telephone. Use it to ring the person you want to see, ask them if you can come in to show your work to them, then make a time. And that’s how it’s done. Easy huh? Well yes it is, but it isn’t, because nine times out of ten the person you want to talk ... Read More! »

It's never going to be about the money, of course. If I wanted to do that, I would've chose a more sensible career path. I went into my interview, not expecting much and of course, when I got offered my Junior Designer role and asked how much I was expecting to be paid, I just sat there gawking. I'm a Junior Designer for a small/medium advertising agency, straight out of university, and I'm being paid around the $35,000 mark. I was told not to expect much so $35,000 sounded reasonable for ... Read More! »
