Sometimes Stan (http://branddna NULL.blogspot NULL.com) really hits the WHIP nail on the head.
I gave a talk at a blogging conference last week, about building a brand rather than a blog.
A handful of people in the audience seemed to take umbrage with my point that Mia Freedman’s very successful Mama Mia blog was in fact a blog.
But she’s a celebrity they cried!
Obviously the point I was trying to make was misunderstood. No biggie.
But my point was that just because you are young, inexperienced or new to the game doesn’t mean you should limit your focus to the bottom rung of the ladder.
Mia started at the bottom. So did I.
But we both had a vision for what we wanted to achieve.
I imagine you too have a vision for yourself. But is it a big, long term vision or simply a ‘get some work experience’ kind of vision.
Nothing wrong with thinking small. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that once you have achieved that goal that it’s job done.
Because it’s not.
Don’t focus on an internship. Don’t focus on getting a job. Don’t focus on getting a great brief.
Focus on seeing your photos in Vogue, your designs picking up a Black Pencil at D&AD or you rubbing shoulders with David Droga at Cannes in 2020.
Your small goal will get you to where you want to go. But my advice is to have a much bigger goal and use a series of small goals to get you there.Tweet
