Hi Esther, I recently graduated with a Visual Communication (graphic design) degree. I also have another degree in Journalism. I want to get into advertising, but I have no idea where to start. Mostly I'm confused about how to apply to 'traditional' big advertising agencies, compared to smaller agencies that refer themselves as a branding/marketing/digital agency etc. The latter seems more 'design' focused, while the former more 'advertising'. Basically, if I want to do more ... Read More! »

Hi Esther, I’m currently living in Melbourne to study advertising, but every time I go back home to the coast one of my mates always enthusiastically questions me about my course and the industry. He is a really confident guy who currently works in sales and I have always pictured him making a great Account Executive. He seems keen on the idea, but I can only help him so much, since my knowledge is more so limited to the creative side of the industry. So how can I get him on the ... Read More! »

Every time I start getting my book together I start thinking its rubbish even though I always had extremely positive feedback from lecturers, one of whom has won many awards ... Read More! »

Regards, Hybrid junior Dear Hybrid Junior, the skills and experience you are gaining as a suit will be very useful when ... Read More! »

Hi Esther, I am in need of some advice! I am currently a graphic designer for an Architecture firm in Melbourne, Australia, but I find that I am not doing much creative and challenging work, most days I'm really not doing much at all! I have been looking for a new job for a while now, on job seeking websites and some cold emailing with my folio attached, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. The position I have is also ended in me debating if I want to still do graphic design, I am ... Read More! »

Hi Esther, Long story short, I left a long term, soul-crushing and creatively mind numbing job, at the end of 2012 in pursuit of a career in graphic design. I completed design college and was told by both my teachers and fellow students that my designs and portfolio were amazing. Completely different to others in the class and very unique. I was also assured I would be an asset to any studio due to my easy to like nature and uncommon ideas when tackling a brief. But I haven't seemed to ... Read More! »
