The Monday Morning WHIP // 79

However cryptic, this week’s Whip is one of Stan (http://branddna NULL.blogspot NULL.com)‘s best. Give yourself some time to think–enlightenment will come.

Another weekend rolls around. Another Saturday morning where I sit and wonder what on earth I’m going to write for the Monday Whip.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on a big pitch, which has proven an excellent source of Whip material.

But now the dust has settled on the pitch I found myself sitting staring at a blank piece of paper.

Much like I do every day it work.

And much like I do every day at work I scribble a few thoughts, toss around a couple of ideas, then get started.

Most times it’s a struggle. Sometimes it comes within minutes. But unless I overcome that piece of blank paper I will have nothing.

And nothing isn’t going to inspire you. Nor will it keep me in a job.

The Monday Morning WHIP // 50

It’s been an entire year since we launched Junior. We’ve had a rad time doing it and have met some incredible people along the way. So seeing as it’s our one-year anniversary, we thought it fitting to re-post Stan (http://branddna NULL.blogspot NULL.com/)‘s very first Monday Morning WHIP. It’s also a good reminder to re-look at all of them, because they’re just as pertinent as ever. Especially this one, which is about being persistent, staying patient, remembering to live your life, and to learn as you go. Because as the famous saying goes, “Quitters never win, and winners never quit.” Remember, Stan doesn’t do this for anyone but you. So if you like getting these inspiring snippets from Stan’s mind every week, let him know how much you appreciate it and send him and email to wtf@lifeatthebottom.com (wtf null@null lifeatthebottom NULL.com). We’ll pass it on.

Making the transition from aspiring creative to working creative isn’t easy. Never has been. Never will be.

It takes a combination of four things; talent, work, persistence and luck. Yes luck.

Talent is a given. If you haven’t got any, there’s not much chance you’ll ever crack a gig. So if you don’t have talent buy yourself a suit and go work as one.

Getting a creative gig takes work. A lot of work.

    Don’t think that because you’ve got a degree you’re guaranteed a job. You’re not.

It takes work. A lot of work. That’s where persistence comes in.

If being a creative is what you want to be, what you really want to be, then you’ll get a job. Eventually.

But getting that job takes persistence.

It might take you a month. It might take you three months. It may even take you a year.

In essence, it takes as long as it takes.

I’m temped to tell you not to despair, but I know you will. I did!

But if being a creative is what you want to be, what you really want to be, you have to keep on keeping on. No matter how long it takes you.

Because sooner or later you’ll be in the right place at the right time to land a job.

It may not be your dream job. It may not be at the place you always saw yourself working. But your first job is a result of talent, work, persistence and luck. A lot of luck.

The Monday Morning WHIP // 15

When we started Junior, we asked our mentor Stan (http://branddna NULL.blogspot NULL.com/) to write a weekly column. It was to be called ‘the Monday Morning WHIP’, and was intended to be a royal kick in the arse every week for juniors everywhere. We asked him because it’s what he does well. We know he does it well because he does it to us. Constantly. We never question him, but some do. So this week, Stan responds to his critics.

Seems there’s a few kids out there who think I don’t know what I’m talking about. Reckon I’m too tough on you all. Reckon you don’t need talent, passion and persistence to get a job. Reckon you don’t need to be as good as Bernbach (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/William_Bernbach) to get a job.

So rather than reading what I have to say, how ‘bout I take a few choice words of advice from some of the employed people that the kids from Junior have interviewed?

“Make sure every piece of work you do is solid gold, no matter what it’s for. The amount of young creatives who just don’t put the effort into learning about the job they’re applying for is astounding.”

    Penny Modra – Three Thousand

“Patience is something that you really have to learn when you start at the bottom. I did pretty well at college but when I got to London, I got absolutely nowhere. It’s a bit of a blow to how good you think you could be.”

    Marcus Johnston – Droga5

“A junior’s behavior will also get them noticed. Be polite with everyone you encounter. You’re a junior advertising creative, not an egocentric A-List celebrity. Be an arrogant shit and no-one will want to work with you.”

    Craig Lovelidge – Creative Director

“It took me five years to get into creative. No amount of Sherbies in a box is going to make a shit book good. If you’re idea is a bit gimmicky, you come across as a gimmicky creative. Rather than a genuine, intelligent one.”

    Emma Hill – Clemenger BBDO

“Build a brilliant book with diverse ideas across all channels, focus on digital, be easy to work with, understand how businesses work, get a great mentor, learn from those above you.”

    Todd Sampson – Leo Burnett
